It’s been a while! This whole trying to finish a PhD thing has been pretty time-consuming 😉
But that’s the beauty of easy recipes like this Baked Ziti. It is the perfect meal for serving for a group or for meal-prepping and eating over the next few days. Dishes with a tomato sauce base always taste so much better the next day as the flavors blend even more.
This Baked Ziti comes together pretty quickly. Sauté onions and garlic, add in the pasta sauce, and let simmer while you boil the pasta.
Prepare a 9×13 pan with butter or oil. Then layer as followed: 1) half the pasta, 2) half the beef sauce stirred in, 3) provolone cheese, 4) sour cream/ricotta cheese, 5) remaining pasta, 6) remaining beef sauce, 7) mozzarella cheese, and 8) parmesan cheese.
Bake (covered with foil for half the time) in your preheated oven until warmed through and cheeses have melted.
If you want to freeze the Baked Ziti to prepare later (perfect for dinner parties!): prepared in aluminum foil pan and layer as instructed then cover and freeze. To bake later, heat at same temperature until it is warmed and melted.
You’ll definitely want to save this recipe:
- 1 tbsp vegetable or olive oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 pound ground lean beef (or turkey or chicken)
- 24 ounce pasta sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 tbsp parsley (dried or fresh)
- 1 lb dry ziti pasta
- 6 slices of provolone cheese (regular or extra thin)
- 1/2 cup sour cream (light is ok) or ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2-4 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley, optional
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Meanwhile, heat oil in large sauce pan.
- Sauté onions until translucent.
- Add in garlic and sauté 30 seconds.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, stirring frequently.
- Pour in spaghetti sauce and stir thoroughly. Bring to a boil then simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
- When your pot of water reaches a rolling boil, add in ziti pasta and cook 1 minute less than the recommended time on your pasta box (8 minutes for me)
- Butter/oil a 9x13 pan and layer dish as indicated below.
- Cover pan with foil and place in preheated oven for 30 minutes, uncovering halfway through.
- Baked Ziti is done when it is warmed through and cheeses are melted.
- Top with fresh parsley, if desired.
- Half ziti
- Half beef sauce, stirred into pasta
- Provolone
- Sour cream, spread evenly
- Remaining pasta
- Remaining sauce
- Mozzarella and parmesan cheeses
- Tip: Penne pasta can be used in place of ziti if you can't find ziti
- I don't love the texture of ricotta and prefer the smooth creaminess of sour cream, so that is what I use. Use whichever you prefer.
