Grain-Free Apple Peanut Butter Doggie Cake with Peanut Butter Yogurt Frosting

Confession: I actually made this Grain-Free Apple Peanut Butter Doggie Cake several months back for my dog Titan to celebrate his 6th birthday/the 5 years since I adopted him. I’m just now getting around to posting the recipe, whoops!
My having Titan is a miracle in itself because I used to be severely phobic to dogs. Like I could not be anywhere near dogs. If I even imagined hearing a dog’s bark, I was on alert and ready to run. I had to cross the street to run away from dogs behind fences. If I accidentally came anywhere close to a dog, I would turn into an Olympic level track star in my efforts to get far far away.
I got to a certain point in my life where I was sick and tired of my phobia. I decided to use the resource of being in a graduate program where a lot of my friends were fellow therapists. I was lucky to have a friend who volunteered to help me overcome my fear with the help of his friendly and obedient golden retriever.
The good thing about exposure therapy is that it really does work. A phobia that I had for over 20 years was successfully resolved in a very short period of time (like a month or less).
As the last part of my exposure therapy, I decided to visit the humane society in the city I lived at that time. I searched their website online to find the most friendly looking little dog. I came across a picture of Titan whose name was “Leroy” at that time. I decided to give it a try and let myself meet this stranger-danger dog.
What was supposed to be a simple exposure season turned into me falling in love with the sweetest dog I have ever met. He melted into my arms and my heart melted along with him. I just had to adopt him before someone else could steal my dog!
5 years and many gray hairs (mostly his) later, this is one of the best decisions I’ve made. I love my little furball, even when he tries my nerves with his bad separation anxiety or his sneaky naughtiness.
I decided to make this doggie cake grain-free because Titan’s food is grain-free and I know lots of other pups are on similar diets.
P.S., Even though this is a doggie cake, because it is made with human ingredients, it actually is edible for humans, at least until you throw doggie treats on it. You probably wouldn’t enjoy it too much though because it is not sweet like a normal human cake would be.
Titan went absolutely crazy for this doggie cake so it was a complete win.

Cake Ingredients
  1. 2 eggs
  2. 6 tbsp natural peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
  3. 1 apple, diced small or grated (I used an unpeeled Granny Smith)
  4. 1 tsp baking soda
Frosting Ingredients
  1. 1/2-3/4 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
  2. 1.5 tbsp peanut butter
Cake Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease baking pans (or muffin tins or ramekins) with coconut or vegetable oil. I used 2, 6-inch layer pans.
  2. Whisk 2 eggs in medium size bowl.
  3. Whisk in peanut butter until as smooth as possible.
  4. Stir in diced apples and baking soda until smooth.
  5. Distribute between pans/cupcake tin. Bake until browned and toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. That took 20 mins for my skinny layer pans.
  6. Cool a few minutes then remove from pan.
  7. Cool completely.
Frosting Instructions
  1. If your peanut butter is a thicker, natural one like mine, heat up in microwave safe bowl for 20 seconds. Whisk with a fork.
  2. Mix in yogurt until smooth.
  3. Frost the cake as desired.

Just made this into doggie doughnuts for my puppy’s 1 year anniversary! She was very helpful in cleaning all the tools while baking. When it came to the final product, she licked all the frosting off first, then ate the cake part. I put some sliced pears on top in addition to the apples inside & she ignored those, haha, but I like a good presentation. The dough smells really good when baking & I’m really happy I know everything that’s inside it. She seems happy with her treat. The recipe came out flawless. Thank you. Can’t wait to share with her doggie cousins.
